Reader:
Hi Dan,
I have been following your blog with interest for some time now (checking everyday for updates!) and really want to thank you for such a great site.
My question is about rainwear. The last rain post was from a while back {see post here} and the weather has changed a fair amount since then. Basically my question is what do you wear in the rain in the summer/ warmer months? I feel like the trench would be too heavy.
Looking forward to your response!
SB:
Hey. Thanks for reading. Glad you are enjoying the site. I got your question this morning and, for the first time in a while here in NYC, it was raining. And 80 degrees (about 26 Celsius).
On my way to the gym this afternoon, had to step out into a little shower.
I love outerwear. It’s one of the things I like to collect in my wardrobe. My trick to accumulating a well-rounded outerwear collection is start by investing in basic, neutral-colored, classic designs (think peacoat, topcoat, trench, etc), then instead of buying another style similar to what you already own (nobody needs three peacoats) – invest in seasonal jacketing.
I have a few coats that I only wear in the coldest month-or-so of the year, and I do the same for the hottest times.
When it’s hot and rainy out, go with a lightweight, unlined nylon jacket like this anorak by A.P.C.
This jacket is paper-thin, keeping dry but adding very little warmth. Nylon jackets are also great for on-and-off weather because they are easily portable.
Nylon anorak by APC (size S) S/s shirt by American Apparel (size S). Navy cotton chinos by Polo Ralph Lauren (size 34). White boat shoes by Sebago. Rucksack by Filson. Umbrella by Dyvek. Handmade wooden bracelets from soHo street vendor. Photography by Clark Shaw
Since you only get so many chances to wear a super lightweight anorak, and it’s typically worn in grey-ish weather, it’s a great chance to wear a splash of bold color – in which case I suggest pairing it with solid neutral basics to anchor it. And of course, it’s also a great layering piece; throw it over an oxford shirt and/or thin sweater come late Spring/early Fall.

I also have a great unlined nylon trench coat that I wear in similar weather, for more formal occasions.
Hope this helps.
Yours in style,
SB

Love the outfit – the bag tops it off ; from what company would you recommend getting a sneaker bag that is stylish and trendy that could go with a outfit like yours

White Boat Shoes!!!! Not enough people wear them (and I am thrilled about it)! I have had a pair for three years now, and it is my go-to pair after the classic brown…

Sb,
Good look with the wet weather outfit. Also, very smart to wear boatshoes in the wet summer weather because that’s what they are made for. Anyone looking to get a pair of white boat shoes for the summer at a low price, try H&M.

Thanks. The first three brands that come to mind are Filson, Jack Spade and LL. Bean.
I usually use a small duffle, but having the rucksack on my back is an easy way to keep it out of the rain (under the unbrella)

These white boat shoes are one of my favorite pairs…to the point that I almost didn’t want to share them on here so I could keep them for myself. But with all my awesome loyal readers, I can’t keep too many secrets to myself ;)

Thanks as always for commenting…although I would be wearing of the construction of H&M footwear. If you’re savy online, you should be able to find some Sebagos or Sperrys for less than $60 with a coupon code
Best,
Dan

Typically, I’m not a fan of backpacks unless you are mountain hiking or doing an overseas cross-country trip. If you are going to carry one a bag like the Filson one you have is ideal. I didn’t even realize it was a backpack till the last picture. It’s a solid choice.
I’m going to echo some of the other comments and say the all white boat shoes are great.

Dan,
Perfect TIming…
On my way back home (wearing an unlined trench), I was thinking of getting a rain slicker…
An even bigger coincidence, GQ also just did a post on rain slickers.. More Ideas and options here..

Hey SB, the outfit looks fresh and well put together; the bag compliments it nicely but what kind of bag do I need to get if I’m going to be traveling on vacation to europe ( I will not be brining any suits), any suggestions

A rain slicker is another great choice, better for fall. Thanks for the link.

Really depends on how long you are going for. I “backpacked” Europe for two months + with the backpack featured in this post, and this bigger wheeled duffle:

It worked out well. Hope this helps!
