Last Sunday was the premiere of Season 4 of Mad Men.
I have to admit, I’m usually not the type to get into a television series, but when I joined my roommate to watch Mad Men for the first time the other night, I was impressed. If there was ever a television show worth watching for fashion inspiration alone, it would be this dramatic series centering around the captivating advertising guru Don Draper and the changing social mores of dapper 1960s America.
I recommend checking it out for a view into a past generation of New York City socialites, a lesson in smart monochromatic dressing (which of course is currently “in style” as we’ve seen with the abundance of 60s inspired slim lapel 2 button grey suits on the runways and streets, for example), and a main character with an inspiringly suave and elegant demeanor.
3-piece gray donegal suit and white poplin shirt by Michael Andrews Bespoke (custom made). Rep stripe tie by Thom Browne. Watch by Montblanc. Cufflinks are Vintage. Black seamless lace-ups by Salvatore Ferragamo. On her: Lingerie is Vintage. – - Special thanks to our model, who ironically happens to be an authentic MadWoman (she works for an Ad agency on Madison Avenue).
Check out Mad Men – Sundays at 10pm ET on AMC
Yours in style,
SB

I’ve waited for a post like this! I love MadMen and I always thought you had a very similar style. The suit looks great too. Not as great as the model though.

Sb,
Really cool post. I haven’t watch the show MadMen, but I have scene all of promos and ads featuring the awesome style inspirations. Would you consider the monochromatic a seasonal or continual look?

Let me first say,
I am humbly grateful to be an avid reader and fan of your blog/website. It is by far inspiring and versatile and you are a bespoke and didactic gentleman to say the least.
I particularly love this post, and saw fit to comment, because I too am intrigued and gravitate to television series that offer great plots along with great fashion sense.
I want you to check out the new series set to premier this fall on HBO, by the name of “Boardwalk Empire”.
Please check it out, you will not be disappointed.
Also, #follow me on twitter my good man. @JHenryPlummer
Best regards,
James.

I must admit that I am very addicted to MAD MEN. I was out of town and was in mid-conversation with my friend and sister, and literally left the room for an hour. Season opener definitely did not disappoint.

SB,
I must regretfully admit I have yet to watch one episode of this series. You execute the 60′s inspired look very well!
Also check out Colin Firth as “George Falconer,” in A Single Man. Tom Ford masterfully displays the monochromatic style of the 60′s in his debut film.
The USA series White Collar also displays a lead character with impeccable style for the modern man.
Any pointers for shopping in Manhattan? Making my virgin voyage to NYC soon. All advice would be appreciated.

I keep meaning to get into this show. Seen a couple episodes and enjoyed what I saw. In style or not, it’s my favorite look for suits.
Keep at it Dan!

Mad Men is definitely one of the greatest dramas ever aired on the little super power we like to call Television. Executive Produced by the same man who created the Sopranos. You can’t expect anything less than greatness. From the pilot til now, absolute genius. Both for Style & Inspiration.
Glad you enjoyed it. (Catch up on the last 3 seasons; it’s a worthwhile quick watch)

Matthew Weiner(Mad Men’s creator) only worked on The Sopranos, he didn’t create it. David Chase created The Sopranos.
If Mad Men is best dressed television drama, I would have to ultimately state that INCEPTION with Leo DiCaprio is best dressed movie of 2010. Much inspiration from it, especially Joseph Gordon Levitt (whom was the sitcom 3rd Rock from the Sun). He had a couple of specifically nicely dressed scenes.

Yeah, Joseph Gordon-Levitt always looks good. He can really pull off those beige and cream colors that are tough for lighter skin tones.
The two style lessons I took from the Mad Men premiere were:
1. Always put a shine on your shoes before a date with a former college gymnast.
2. Know how to sew a button onto a shirt (or your son’s pajamas) if necessary.

Dapper look – event he striped couch adds to the photo. I saw the premiere of Mad Men – and that was the first episode I’ve seen and I liked it, esp. since I work in advertising myself. I need to catch more episodes.
