We received plenty of positive feedback from last Fall’s “Back to Campus in Style” post featuring Alex Wilson. So much, actually, that we decided to bring him back.

I, like many of our readers, appreciate his tasteful, campus (and budget) friendly style.

Here, he gives us a taste of what he’s been wearing this winter in his Junior year at the University of Cincinnati.

Monday

“This outfit is one of my favorites… I really like to mix shades of blue. It’s a safe and flattering color for men.”

Blue is one of those colors that often complements itself (rather than clashing) in different shades.

”The shoes were a Christmas gift from my girlfriend. They have easily become my favorite pair.”

Herringbone Blazer by Lands’ End Canvas. V-Neck Sweater by Gap. Button Down Collar Shirt and Pants by J.Crew. Socks by Happy Socks. Shoes by Florsheim (Veblen).

Tuesday

“Today I was meeting with a classmate over coffee to discuss a project we’re working on.

I usually go with this duffle bag if I don’t need to carry a whole lot. I really like that it’s made from a wool tweed – a classic menswear fabric. It reminds me of a vintage blazer. The best part, it was a thrift find.”

“I used the yellow cardigan to add some life to the winter color scheme. I think that people can get too caught up in the weather, causing their dress, and mood, to be dull.”

Chino Blazer, Herringbone Jeans and Scarf by Gap. Cardigan by Izod (thrifted). Button Down Collar Shirt and Socks by Lands’ End Canvas. V Neck by Hanes. Clark’s Suede Desert Boots. Bag by Pierre Cardin (thrifted). Sunglasses by Urban Outfitters. Bandana Thrifted.

Wednesday

“As a college student, some days can feel really long, especially in the winter, especially in Cincinati. Some days I wake up for class in the dark and by the time I’m heading home, 8-10 hours later, it’s getting dark again.

Today it was raining and especially gloomy. My friend Bill, who photographed this post, nailed it while we were taking pictures in the rain: “Dressing well isn’t just for sunny days”.

When I found these pants at the thrift store they were bell-bottoms and about three inches too long. I paid $3 for them, had them tailored for $20, and now they look like a $100 pair of pants. They also fit me better than anything I’ve bought off the rack.”

Jacket and Button-Down Collar Shirt by Lands’ End Canvas. Shawl Cardigan by Gap. Wool Tie and herringbone trousers Thrifted. Tie bar by TheTieBar. Boots by Lands’ End.

Thursday

“Today the weather was mild and our class had a guest speaker, so I traveled light.

Trying to lighten the mood here again with a little more color – I’m telling you it works.”

I like the cropped shawl collar on this sweater, it shows more shirt collar than a traditional fold-over.

Sweater: Lands’ End Canvas. Button-Down Collared Shirt by J. Crew. Trousers by Unis. Socks by American Apparel. Shoes by Florsheim (Veblen). Watch by Skagen. Hook Bracelet by Miansai.

Friday

An email I get one or twice a week: “SB, I’m in college. I want to dress up, but I don’t want to look too dressed up or like I’m taking myself too seriously – it’s college after all.”

There are plenty of ways to dress “down the middle”; well put-together but not too formal. In my opinion, it’s the ideal way to dress. To be ready for just about any occasion and be relatable/approachable to just about anybody.

This look is a great example. Alex uses the cap and the use of fabric and pattern to turn a traditional “dressy” look into a “casually put together” look. Perfect for a day of classes or drinks at the college pub.

“This wool cap is great because it keeps my head warm and looks casual – but not too casual like a fitted or snapback.”

Wool Hat, Donegal Jacket, Donegal Waistcoat and Button-Down Collar Shirt by Lands’ End/ LEC. Jeans by Levi’s 511. Tie Thrifted. Tie Bar by TheTieBar. Socks Thrifted (had tags on them :) Double Monk Strap Shoes by Hugo Boss. Bandana Thrifted. Bag by Pierre Cardin (Thrifted).

Thanks, as always, for reading and special thanks to Alex for participating.

Yours in style,

This winter has been unbelievably mild in NYC. My heaviest coats haven’t left the closet yet and I’m not sure if they will at all this year.

It’s the last week of January and I find myself getting more use out of mid-weight jackets (like this badass suede bomber) than any of my heavy parkas.

Typically these would be more Spring-appropriate outfits, but I have to keep it real with what I’ve been wearing lately.

Here I styled a warm-but-not-heavy bomber jacket for three different mild winter occasions.

1. Business Casual

A bomber jacket in a classic shape, luxurious fabric (like leather or suede) and neutral color (like this awesome grey/olive) can easily swap-out a suit jacket to turn a “corporate” look into a “business casual” look.

As proof, this is actually the exact same outfit as the first look in this post, all I changed was the jacket (and scarf, of course).

A bomber jacket (whether it’s suede, denim, leather, cotton, etc.) should fit snug through the body and sleeve, and hit just a few inches below the waistband.

Suede bomber jacket by John Varvatos (50). Shirt and navy trousers (part of suit) by Michael Andrews Bespoke. Cashmere blend socks by Marcoliani. Loafers by Allen Edmonds. Tie bar by Tiffany & Co. Watch and alligator band by Montblanc.

2. Watching the Game

Like I said, this is usually one of my go-tos in the Spring.

It’s casual, easy, and masuline. Perfect for watching the game with the boys – either at the bar or the arena.

With a simple combination of v-neck sweater + chinos + shades, this is one of those “confident cool” looks that reminds me of the classic men of old Hollywood – guys like James Dean and Steve McQueen.

Suede bomber jacket by John Varvatos (50). Black v-neck sweater by H&M (M). Black alligator belt and silver buckle by Ralph Lauren Purple Label (36). Boots by Alexander McQueen (perhaps my favorite pair). Chinos by Helmut Lang (33). Shades by Persol. Watch and black alligator band by Montblanc.

3. Afternoon Errands/Evening Date

You have to adapt to unexpected weather. As I’ve written before: check the forecast and dress for the current conditions, not what you expect from the calendar’s precedent.

For all these in-between, kind-of-cold days I’ve found it comfortable to use a thin turtleneck as an insulating layer under a heavier sport shirt. Many of my looks are born out of practicality and comfort, and this is a good example.

Yet another way to wear that versatile turtleneck, as featured here.

This jacket works with just about everything. In truth, I was wearing a different jacket over this look and just quickly changed it to complete this blog entry.

That goes back to the thesis of this post – a wardrobe should be built with versatility and interchangeability as its top priorities.

Suede bomber jacket by John Varvatos (50). Turtleneck by Uniqlo (M). Denim shirt by Levis (M). Chinos by Helmut Lang (33). Suede loafers by Ralph Lauren. Burgundy socks by Marcoliani. Brown alligator belt and silver buckle by Ralph Lauren Purple Label.

Thanks, as always, for reading.

Yours in style,

In a perfectly curated wardrobe, all of the pieces (well, almost all) should make sense together and be interchangeable. For example, each of the ties should work with each of the shirts, and each of the shirts should work with each of the trousers. In theory, you could get dressed in the dark.

I’ve touched on this point in prior posts, and by popular request from all the readers trying to re-invent their closets, I narrowed down a list of 25 essential items that can serve as the basis for a classic wardrobe. Using only these 25 items you should be able to create hundreds of different outfit combinations and be appropriately (and sylishly) dressed for any occasion.

Before you run to the mall, however, keep in mind that, as always, I recommend buying quality. Well-made clothing looks better every time you wear it and it lasts longer, saving you money in the long run. These are all classic foundational items that you can wear for the next 15+ years. Think of them as investments. Investements in your appearance, your first impressions, your confidence, your career…your overall quality of life.

Price points are relative to the individual and his disposable income. It might take two years to build a new, well-edited wardrobe. That’s okay. It’s a marathon, not a sprint.

For those going through body changes, it’s a good idea to wait until you stabilize at a weight that you are happy with and can realistically maintain.

Lastly, before wearing any of your new pieces, don’t forget to bring them to your tailor. Tell him how you want it to look (even if you have to bring a photo to help communicate) and ask him what can be done and how much it will cost. Don’t be cheap at the tailor.

Here it goes….

1. Solid dark navy “four season” suit

- This is your go-to business suit. You can wear it three times in one week and nobody will even notice (the beauty of solid navy in the corporate world).

- It can also be broken up and worn as a blazer (with the jeans, chinos, textured trousers, etc) or a pair of basic trousers (with the oxford and tie, under the textured jacket, with the solid cardigan & patterned shirt, etc). Include a vest to make it a three-piece and have even more ways to wear it.

- Look for a fabric that is dark enough to wear in the evening (to a club, semi-formal event, etc.) to increase versatility.

- If you’ve been thinking about trying custom or bespoke, this is a good time to do it (in which case I recommend my tailors at Michael Andrews Bespoke).

- If you’re buying off-the-rack, make sure the jacket fits properly in the shoulders, chest and the length of the body. The slimness of the sides and length of the sleeves are easy (read: inexpensive) alterations.

Alternative: Solid charcoal.

2. Classic tuxedo

- Get a classic tux that will last you more than 10 years. Black. Four season. One button. Satin trim. Shawl collar or peak lapel.

- You may only wear it once or twice a year, but those are the times you want to look your absolute best.

- If it’s within your budget, this is also a good staple to have custom made (in which case I recommend my tailors Michael Andrews Bespoke).

- If you can pull it off, the jacket can also be worn for a night out to the club (as featured here).

Alternative: Midnight blue with grosgrain trim (as pictured).

3. Seasonal suit with texture and/or pattern

- This is the suit that you will wear more often as separates. It’s a go-to blazer. It’s a go-to pair of trousers. And when you want and extra style punch, you wear them together as a suit.

- The fabric should have some texture and be more whether-appropriate than the solid 4-season suit.

Alternative: The options here will change depending on the climate where you live. Corduroy (as pictured), donegal tweed, glenplaid flannel, wool herringbone, chino cotton, seersucker, linen, hopsack, etc…

4. White covered-placket formal shirt

- It doesn’t get much more versatile than a white shirt in a textured cloth with a covered placket and french cuffs. It’s a formal shirt that’s perfect for a tux (see look 2 below) and a business shirt that’s perfect for a navy suit (a traditional necktie hides the covered placket).

Alternative: If you’re a shirt studs man, some formal shirts have stud holes with a removable button placket. These can also work for the office and the black tie event, although you’ll need a set of shirt studs and a cummerbund to cover the 5th (and 6th) shirt buttons.

5. Light oxford shirt with button-down collar

- Make sure the collar and shoulders fit and the sleeves aren’t too short - everything else can be tailored.

- This is a casual shirt that can easily be dressed up. For maximum versatility, it should be just long enough to stay in your pants when tucked, but still short enough for a casually untucked look (it should hit a few inches below the waistband).

Alternative: Blue/white stripe oxford, light blue chambray, pale pink oxford, pale lavender oxford, pale grey oxford

6. Slim dark jeans

- Try on 20 pairs and have the best fitting ones tailored – you’re going to wear the hell out of them.

- Make sure they fit slim enough to wear with a blazer (similar to your suit pants in shape and proportion) and make sure the hemline can accommodate for a pair of loafers or lace-ups.

- Can be dressed up or down, of course, and work with just about everything in your new wardrobe.

Alternative: Raw denim, slightly washed (but still clean and dark) denim, navy 5-pocket corduroys

7. Slim neutral chinos

- See #6 above (dark jeans), same rules apply

Alternative: Khaki cotton chinos, pale grey cotton chinos, light grey flannel trousers, brown corduroy trousers

8 & 9. Elegant universal belt (1 brown, 1 black)

- Look for a narrow go-to belt (I like 1″) because it can be dressed up or down. Keep the buckle silver and simple, it’s not meant to draw attention.

Alternative: Exotic skins (alligator, crocodile, lizard, etc) are the most elegant (and expensive), but you can’t go wrong with a simple calfskin.

10 & 11. Neutral timepiece & versatile band

- Think silver with a neutral, easy-to-read face and sized proportionally to your wrist.

- 35-38mm is ideal for the average-sized wrist. It’s small enough to look elegant with formal attire and just big enough to complement a laid-back look.

Alternative: For my watch i have multiple bands and a pin tool to easily switch them. I wear black alligator or brown alligator most often, but an inexpensive grosgrain strap in dark neutral colors is the most versatile and treads that casual/dressy line nicely.

12. Classic shades

- Bring a friend (someone whose opinion you value) and hit a sunglass shop with a large selection. Try on 20 pairs that appeal to you. Buy the pair that suits your face the best and looks most natural on you. Have them fitted to your face before you leave the shop. That’s how to buy sunglasses, not because celebs wear them.

Alternative: Look for a classic shape (like aviators or wayfarers) in tortoise or a solid neutral color.

13. Thin neutral turtleneck sweater

- We’ve done plenty on the versatility of the turtleneck (see here and here)

Alternative: Think solid and neutral – burgundy, navy, grey, olive, etc. If you simply don’t like turtlenecks (or they don’t flatter your body type) you could do a solid crewneck sweater here, in which case I recommend cashmere.

14. Solid neutral cardigan

- This should be snug through the body, hit a few inches below the waistband and fit easily under your suit jacket(s).

Alternative: Think solid and neutral – burgundy, navy, grey, olive, etc. If you simply don’t like cardigans, you could do a v-neck sweater, in which case I recommend cashmere.

15. Black plain toe dress shoe

- This is your go-to elegant shoe.

- Look for a pair with a clean plain toe (no seams or broging) because they can be worn as formal shoes with the tuxedo (have them freshly shined) or as business shoes with one of the suits.

Alternative: A pair of sharp black loafers with a plain toe could also be worn for formal or corporate occasions.

16. Brown chunky wingtips

- This is your go-to shoe, from dressy to casual. They work with everything in your wardrobe (with the exception of the tuxedo).

- They should be sleek enough to wear with a suit (shine them first) but chunky enough to anchor down a casual look with jeans or chinos.

Alternative: Depending on the climate where you live, you could swap these for a sharp boot (see here) or a pair of classic penny loafers. Whichever style works best for you, look for something dark brown, burgundy or oxblood as they will be the most versatile.

17. Neutral desert boots

- This is your go-to for casual occasions.

Alternative: If you tend to dress more casually, or you live in hot climates (which typically have a more casually dressed culture), you can substitute these for a classic white low-top sneaker, like a pair of common projects or chuck tailors.

18. Classic peacoat

- Everyday coat.

- Ideally it should be a couple inches longer than your suit jackets, with just enough room to fit them under (like here).

Alternative: Navy, grey or camel work well for classic peacoats. Depending on your lifestyle, you could swap this for a topcoat (more formal) or a duffle/parka (more casual).

19. Neutral scarf

- I used my chunky fair isle scarf for this post, but an understated solid cashmere would be even more versatile.

- It should work with all of the shirts, the peacoat, the trench, the suit(s), the sweaters, etc.

Alternative: Think neutral, solid or a very subtle pattern – brown, navy, grey, olive, burgundy, etc.

20. Repp stripe tie

- Should be a simple and relatively neutral color combo. It should work with all of your shirts, sweaters, jackets and pants.

- I think a 2.75″ bottom (across its widest point) has the most attractive balance. It’s slim without being skinny. If you’re a size 40 or under, that is what I recommend. Size 42 should be around 3″. Size 44+ should be in traditional 3.25-3.5 ties.

- A windsor knot is for a spread collar. A spread collar is for a guy with a large neck (16″+). (I know there are going to be comments on this from the windsor knot guys. Keep in mind that these are simply my suggestions/preferences as a stylist. If you feel more confident in a windsor, or even a double windsor, by all means, go for it).

Alternative: If stripes aren’t your thing, you could do a solid textured tie (like wool or silk knit) or perhaps a repeat pattern (dots, crests, etc).

21. White cotton pocket square

- A simple touch that, when folded square, shouldn’t be “over the top” for anybody.

Alternative: If you are slightly more adventurous you can try white cotton with a tipped edge in a neutral color (like navy or brown). Or you could always experiment with some pattern.

22. Neutral checked shirt

- Keep the pattern small enough to wear with a suit and tie, but big enough that it can also pass as a casual shirt (with the jeans, chinos, cardigan, peacoat, blazer, etc).

Alternative: Any shirt with a light base and neutral check/plaid will do the trick (like the ever-so-popular gingham).

23. Neutral trench

- Your go-to for foul weather.

- A removable wool lining (available in many trench coats) turns this piece into a go-to winter coat as well.

- Ideally it should be just large enough to fit over a suit/blazer, but still slim enough to wear with just a shirt and/or sweater.

Alternative: Single breasted or double breasted. Keep it neutral – navy, tan/beige, brown, olive, even burgundy (like here).

24. Black bowtie

- Every man should own one.

- Learn to tie it, no clip-ons.

- Ideally, it should be cut from the same fabric (or very similar) as the lapels on your tuxedo

Alternative: If you’re not comfortable in bowties, you can substitute here for a traditional black tie (but only if your tux has peak lapels – shawl collars are bowtie only!)

25. Simple silver tie Bar

- Silver, no frills, just long enough to make it across your tie a couple inches below your sternum (typically 1.5″-2″).

Alternative: If you want to add a style punch you could get a tie bar with a little more personality, or go with a collar pin instead.

Honorable Mention (items that almost made the list)

- Lightweight bomber jacket (denim, leather, suede, etc.)

- Chunky shawl cardigan

- Down vest

- Wool Ivy/driving cap (herringbone, tweed, cashmere, etc.)

- Classic penny loafers (dark brown/burgundy/oxblood)

- Rain/snow boots

———————————————————————————————–

In the five looks below I am wearing all of – and only - the 25 items.

From these 25 essentials you can create hundreds of different combinations.

It’s on you to learn how to put your own spin on them, and build from there.

1. Corporate Setting

Lose the tie and unfasten a couple shirt buttons after a long day and you’re ready for a night out.

I’m not a fan of patent leather tuxedo shoes. They almost always look cheap, and you certainly can’t wear them to a business meeting (like here).

Midnight navy suit and grey flannel plaid shirt by Michael Andrews Bespoke.
2. Black Tie Formal

Rental tuxedos and clip-on bowties are for boys. Grow up and get your James Bond on.

Midnight navy tuxedo and white covered-placket shirt by Michael Andrews Bespoke. Black bowtie by Bergdorf Goodman. White cotton pocket square. Seamless plain toe lace-ups by Ferragamo Tramezza. Watch by Montblanc.

3. Business Casual

Not sure if a situation calls for dressy or casual? Hit it right down the middle.

You could achieve a similar look with the navy suit jacket, textured suit trousers, cardigan sweater, plaid shirt, etc… There are multiple variations within these 25 pieces.

Trench by Brooks Brothers Black Fleece.
4. Easy Weekender

For those days when you just want to throw on a sweater and be comfortable.

No reason it can’t still look sharp.

Turtleneck sweater by Uniqlo.
5. Ready for Any Occasion

Whenever my mother (my first style inspiration, as featured here, here and here) and I get together, which, sadly, is only a few times a year, we end up working on some kind of fashion related arts and crafts project. One year we made a pair of red denim gloves that I still wear once in a while in the breast pocket of an overcoat.

Over this past Christmas holiday I had my eye on my late grandmother’s leather and fur coat that was collecting dust in the back of our living room closet.

I said to my mom: “Wouldn’t it be cool if we cut that fur into a scarf?”

That night her and I are at the kitchen table until 2am cutting and sewing almost all of the coat’s fur (meme was a tiny woman) into a double-faced scarf.

The outcome was awesome and very personal to me. Not only did my mother and I hand-make it together, but it’s genuine Canadian beaver (a national symbol of Canada) and, of course, it reminds me of my grandmother.

There are high-end stores that carry fur scarves, but knowing a thing or two about sewing (or someone that does) can save you hundreds, or more, at a local vintage store.

Here, I styled my new favorite scarf four different ways.

1. Corporate Luxury

Fur can be tough to pull-off without it looking like too much. It’s a good idea to keep the fur as the only accent on a simple, classic look. And of course, you have to wear it with confidence and own it. Fur is not for the timid.

Because it’s a luxury fabric, it will come off as dressy, elegant and rich. Therefore it’s a perfect match for a dark, sharply tailored suit. A simple ascot loop (like the first part of tying your shoes) with the front end laying flat against the chest is an easy way to tie a rectangular scarf over a suit. It’s simple, clean and keeps the suited look’s age-old symmetry.

As with any bold show of luxury, it’s important keep everything in context – especially in a corporate setting. Some things need to be “earned”. This isn’t for first year analysts, this is bossy.

I was wearing black footwear here – I think it’s the most fitting color for winter weather and I love the sharpness against a dark navy suit.

This would work just as well with chocolate brown – it may even be better to bring the whole look together because of the browns in the scarf.

Homemade fur scarf. Suit and shirt by Michael Andrews Bespoke. Wool tie by Thom Browne. Tie bar by Tiffany & Co. ”The Adams” loafers by Allen Edmonds. Cashmere blend socks by Marcoliani. Watch and black alligator band by Montblanc.

2. Business Casual

It doesn’t get much warmer than genuine fur. Lay it around the neck, wrap one end over the other across your body, and anchor it down under a jacket and you will not need a coat – at least not in the mild weather we’ve been having in NYC.

Homemade fur scarf. Jacket (part of suit, as feature way back here) by Hugo Boss. Blue flannel herringbone shirt by Michael Andrews Bespoke. Burgundy cardigan by The Brooklyn Circus. Wool pocket square by Armstrong & Wilson. Unlined suede driving gloves (for my bicycle) by Cole Hann.

3. Just a Hint

A luxurious scarf can instantly amp up an easy casual look – even if it’s just peeking out.

We shot this look a while back for our post on peacoats, here.

Homemade fur scarf. Down peacoat by Hugo by Hugo Boss (M – available here). Jeans by JBrand (Kane, 32). Gloves by Hilts Willard. Boots by UGG Australia

4. Keep it Simple, Solid

As I’ve written in the past, if you have a well edited wardrobe it’s easy to dress well. The brunt of your personal styling should happen while shopping.

Think about each individual piece’s investment value - how long it will last (durability and style) and how many outfits you can make with it using what you already have in your closet. If all of your pieces have a high investment value, you should be almost able to get dressed in the dark.

Combining solid pieces in neutral colors (like navy, white, and camel) keeps the attention on your face, and leaves less room for distractions or pattern-mixing errors.

This look may be considered style-forward, but it’s actually a very simple combination of classic menswear staples.

If you’re a pale guy, like me, you want to avoid beige or khaki tops and stick with the darker, more saturated camel.

Homemade fur scarf.
Thanks, as always, for reading – and special thanks again to my mom for helping my whip this thing up.

Yours in style,

All the magazines are telling you ”the varsity jacket is back!”.

Where did it go? I’ve been wearing varisty jackets since my freshman year of high school. In my opinion they have always been a great option for a sporty and masculine casual jacket. Athletes wear them with pride, preppy types love them, hell, there’s even a good chance your dad still has one in the back of his closet.

The good news is, their current popularity means there’s a good selection on the market. I tried a handful of different designers before finding this number from The Brookyn Circus - founded by Ouigi Theodore (as featured here).

The slim-but-not-snug fit, the quality of the wool and leather, the clean button closure, the iconic “concrete-jungle” symbol, the taller ribbed collar, and the fact that it’s Made in USA had me sold as soon as I put it on.

Here, I styled it for 5 different weekend outfits.

1. Denim & Chino

On a weekend with nothing to do, which seams to be rare lately, this is what you can find me in.

Simple, masculine, put-together but not over-the-top.

Take a look at your go-to casual pieces for a laidback day, it might be time to upgrade. A well rounded wardrobe has you ready for any occasion, even if there isn’t really an occasion at all.

Varsity jacket by The Brooklyn Circus (L). Denim shirt by RRL (M). Chinos by Helmut Lang (33). Shades by Matsuda. Boots by Allen Edmonds (as featured Here). Watch and brown alligator band by Montblanc.

2. White Tee, White Kicks

Another simple look here. This is kind of a throwback for me. I would’ve worn something like this 10 years ago – only the jeans would be looser and lower on the waist and somewhere on the jacket is would say “Champs” (haha – shout out to all my highschool bball teammates).

Classic white sneakers are an inexpensive addition to your wardrobe that can add a cool vibe to a number of different looks (see here).

Varsity jacket and burgundy cardigan by The Brooklyn Circus (L). T-shirt by Kenneth Cole. Jeans by JCrew. Belt by Ralph Lauren Purple Label. Sneakers (“blazers”) by Nike. Shades by Persol.

3. Ivy Inspired

Channeling my Ivy League days here.

Varsity jackets have a great collegiate appeal, which means you can pair them with a retro preppy look. In this outfit that means a tweed vest, oxford shirt, rep tie, collar pin, penny loafs, etc.

Varsity jacket by The Brooklyn Circus (L).
Look for a varsity jacket in neutral colors (like navy and brown), it will work over just about any casual look.

Rugged chunky sweater, slim cargos, neutral sneaks – another easy weekend look.

Because the jacket is neutral and versatile it fits right over without having to think about it too much.

Varsity jacket by The Brooklyn Circus (L).
5. Tweedy Gent

Since men have been wearing them for so long, it works with a tweedy vintage-inspired look as well.

Vintage stores can be a decent place to find an inexpensive varsity jacket, just make sure the fit isn’t too loose or boxy and it’s not branded with someone else’s name and athletic achievements – that’s just weird.

Varsity jacket by The Brooklyn Circus (L).

It’s always great to have the team together – especially for showroom visits.

Last month when we visited the Stetson office we were missing Westley, but Karyn – soon to be host of The Style Blogger for Her - filled in nicely.

We each selected our favorite hat from their current season’s well-rounded collection and styled it in our own way.

Townsend, PR/Media Assistant – Wool Herringbone Cap

What I love about Townsend’s style is that it’s always very classic. It’s not over-thought, it’s natural. It’s preppy without the overdone in-your-face “modern twist”. The way preppy was meant to be. It’s him. He’s been dressing in cords, oxfords and peacoats for years and will continue to do so forever.

Naturally, he went with an Ivy Cap in a classic menswear fabric.

A wool herringbone driving cap in a neutral color (like grey, navy, green, black, brown) is the type of hat you fall in love with. You find it surprisingly versatile. It goes with everything. Then it breaks-in and gets very comfortable. It’s warm. Cozy, you might say. Then you find yourself missing it. And suddenly applying hair product is a pain. It’s a relationship now.

And that’s why men have old, classic hats.

Wide herringbone wool cap by Stetson. Crewneck sweater by Rugby. Peacoat and corduroys by JCrew (I had the buttons changed). Oxford shirt and sunglasses by Polo Ralph Lauren. Cap toe shoes by Aldo.

Chris, Head of Video Production – “Boss of the Plain” Cowboy

When in Rome, do as the Romans do.

“This may not be a typical outfit for me, but I like to dress appropriately for all occasions; a nice dinner, a party or even a rodeo. I’m working on a documentary about bull riding and thought I should make the effort.

This boss of the plain hat looks so authentic. The detailing gives it a worn feel so I won’t look like I just ripped the tag off my new hat when I’m around real cowboys.

I tried to mix in my own personal style so it’s more natural and not too costumy. Ralph Lauren makes great classic, rustic American pieces so it’s easy to make his clothes look a little country.”

“Boss of the Plains” cowboy hat by Stetson. Denim jacket and western shirt by Ralph Lauren Denim & Supply. Cords by Rugby. Boots by John Varvatos

Dan, Founder/Author – Felt Fedora

When a friend of mine told her grandfather to pack his suit, he packed a jacket, trousers, shirt, tie, shoes, socks, braces, and a hat.

Believe it or not, there was a time, not very long ago, when a man wouldn’t step outside his house without a hat on. And it wasn’t a baseball cap or a beanie. It was a fedora (or a similar shape).

Men rarely wear brimmed hats anymore, it’s a shame that things have swung so far the other way. The good news is, wearing a classic felt fedora, the same hat that men have been “pulling off” day-in and day-out for years, is now considered a style statement by many.

A classic felt fedora can be dressed up or down and is awesome for the rain. One of the things that guys forget when they buy cheap headwear is that hats should be able to protect your head from the elements. This one (and my “grandma” featured here) are my rain hats. They take a beating keeping my head warm, face dry and hair in place. But because they’re well-made hats blocked in quality fabrics, even after a tough storm they dry quickly and bounce back into shape .

Classic fedora hat by Stetson. Shirt and trousers by Michael Andrews Bespoke. Tie by Smart Turnout. Shoes by Barker Black.

Alex, Head of Photography – Fine Felt Fedora

“The Stratoliner is a Stetson classic, one of the oldest styles.

Just like Chris’ Boss of the Plain, the Stratoliner was originally created to be a working man’s hat. A nice wide brim and a domed top (original models had a domed top, but now it’s sold “pre-crushed”) kept the wearer cool and shaded in the sun, and dry in the rain.

To pay homage to the hat’s original intent I paired it with dark jeans, a classic wool workmans shirt and some broken-in leather boots.”

“Stratoliner” fine fur fedora hat by Stetson. Blue oxford by Gap. Plaid workshirt/jacket no tags (thrifted). Denim by J. Crew. Desert boots by Clarks (resoled) with red laces from J. Crew.

“Gotta love a hat that goes with everything – including this full-shearling-lined leather bomber jacket. My best vintage find of 2011 by far.”

“Madison” donegal tweed cap by Stetson.

For whatever reason, too many guys shy away from the turtleneck sweater.

A thin turtleneck in a dark neutral color – like this forest green – works with just about anything and can instantly make your look more mature and rakish.

Here I styled a fine-gage wool turtleneck from Uniqlo for 5 different occasions.

1. Evening Event or Work Cocktail Party

The sweater should be snug enough that it hugs your body and fits easily under a sharply tailored suit.

A turtleneck + suit is a simple, refined look that isn’t fussy and emits confidence.

Bonus Tip: Keep in mind that the turtleneck is probably best for those with a longer and thinner neck (that is not to say that others can’t pull it off).

Bonus Tip II: Earthy tones look great on just about any skin tone. I’m a huge fan of olive and brown with tan accents.

Bonus Tip III: A subtle accent color can be used in small doses to bring your look together. Yellowish tan in the tortoiseshell shades, light horn suit buttons, natural leather shoes.

Turtleneck by Uniqlo (M). Suit by Michael Andrews Bespoke (coming soon to MAB by Dan Trepanier…stay tuned). Shades by Matsuda Eyewear. Pocket square by Armstrong & Wilson. Monkstraps by Scarpe di Bianco. Socks by Paul Smith. Watch and brown alligator band by Montblanc.

2. Easy Weekender

Don’t be afraid to layer a chunky cardigan over a thinner sweater, whether it’s a turtleneck, crewneck, or even another finer-gage cardigan.

Mixing textured fabrics in saturated colors makes a simple everyday look more unique and memorable.

Turtleneck by Uniqlo (M). Chunky belted cardigan by Polo Ralph Lauren (M). Cords by levis (34, tapered). Suede chukkas by Church’s. Watch and band by Montblanc.

3. Two-Minute Business Casual

Depending on your office, a turtleneck and tweed trousers can often pass as “business casual”. It’s cozier than a shirt and tie and makes for an outfit that is quick and easy to put together in the morning.

This winter has been freekishly mild. It’s January and there are days when my handmade Yokoo scarves are still keeping my heavy coats in the closet.

Turtleneck by Uniqlo (M). Trousers (part of this tweed suit) by Michael Andrews Bespoke. Socks by Polo Ralph Lauren. Loafers by Johnston & Murphy. Watch and brown alligator band by Montblanc.
4. Family Get Together

If you’re looking for an outfit that is not-too-dressy and not-too-casual, think blazer + jeans + sweater.

A pocket square doesn’t always have to pop in-your-face. Try something tonal and textured for a subtle, tasteful touch.

Turtleneck by Uniqlo (M). Corduroy jacket (part of suit) by MAB by Dan Trepanier (more soon). Jeans by APC (New Standard 32, tapered & cropped). Boots by Allen Edmonds (as featured here). Shades by Ralph Lauren Purple Label. Pocket square by Armstrong & Wilson.

5. Just About Any Occasion

Pair it with a slim pair of chinos and a classic jacket for a look that will have you ready for just about anything that might come up.

I wore this look with the peacoat shopping and ended up buying a new dark denim jacket from the Levis store in Soho, so I figured we’d shoot it with this look as well (hence why the denim jacket looks 5 minutes old here – it’ll get softer and fit better with age and wear).

Think outside the box. There are dozens of different ways to wear a thin turtleneck. In fact, as I’m writting this I’m wearing it under a corduroy shirt with jeans.

Turtleneck by Uniqlo (M).

You can’t go wrong with a classic double-breasted peacoat.

They come in all shapes, sizes, fabrics and price points. If the color is subtle and neutral, and the fit is on-point, it doesn’t get much better for an everyday coat.

Here I styled some of the peacoats from my closet for some everyday ideas.

1. Wine Wool

A deep wine can be treated as a neutral color and stands out from the sea of navy, grey and black.

Don’t be that guy who only wears brown shoes because it’s more “European”. Fight that a little. Black is sharp, tough and gritty.

When in doubt, play if safe with a simple white oxford, grey trouser and sharp wingtip.

Peacoat by Kennth Cole (M). Shirt by Band of Outsiders (3). Chinos by Michael Andrews Bespoke. Striped socks by Happy Socks. Leather/suede spectator wingtips by Barker Black.

2. Naval Issue

Some of the best peacoats were commissioned by the military and issued to the naval academy. They were made from tough and rugged navy blue wool and were built to keep their shape through the toughest conditions.

The best part is, you can usually find a reasonably priced selection at just about any decent vintage store.

Bonus Tip: Whenever buying army or navy gear (and vintage most of the time) keep in mind that you may have to size down to get the fit you are looking for.

Bonus Tip II: Yes, you can wear it over a suit. As long as the coat is longer than the jacket, and it fits comfortably over the shoulders and midsection, it’s fair game.

Vintage military-issue peacoat (size 38). Corduroy suit and purple check shirt both by Michael Andrews Bespoke. Wool socks by Polo Ralph Lauren. Vintage tie. Wingtips by Scarpe di Bianco.

3. Cotton Moleskin

Moleskin is tough, rugged and laid-back. A perfect jacket for a low key date, or a casual night out with friends.

Those wicked wingtips boots by Allen Edmonds again, as featured here.

Moleskin peacoat by Filipa K (50). Chambray shirt by Rag&Bone (M). Cardigan by Club Monaco (sample). Jeans by APC (new standard 32, tapered and cropped). Boots by Allen Edmonds. Shades by Matsuda Eyewear.

4. Leather

I’m typically not an impulse shopper, but when I saw this money green leather peacoat at the Hugo Boss outlet in my hometown, I had to scoop it.

It’s a classic peacoat but because of the fabric selection I’ve never seen one similar. It’s also a heavy leather with full wool lining which gives it parka-like warmth.

A dark green is also fairly neutral, it works with many other colors – blues, browns, beiges, burgundys, etc.

Bonus Tip: Don’t overthink the roll of your pant hem – it looks better natural and slightly unkept, especially with jeans.

Leather peacoat by Hugo Boss Selection (5). Shirt by Michael Andrews Bespoke. Jeans and socks by Polo Ralph Lauren. Loafers by Johnston & Murphy. Hand-knit scarf by Yokoo Scarves. Belt by Ralph Lauren Purple Label. Watch and brown alligator band by Montblanc.

5. Plaid & Belted

Of course, not every peacoat is for everyday use. Sometimes they can serve as statement outerwear – a great refresher from the routine of navy, grey, brown and black outerwear.

Because the shape is timeless, it’s easier to incorporate details like a bolder plaid fabric, patch pockets and a belted waist.

Plaid wool peacoat by Polo Ralph Lauren (M). Beanie by JCrew. Gloves by Uniqlo. Jeans by JBrand (“Dylan”, 34). Suede wingtips by Bass.

6. Down Puffer

Down coats aren’t all big and bulky anymore. This slim-fit, less-puffy down peacoat by Hugo Boss is cut from wool flannel suiting and is the perfect balance between dressy and casual. Available at select Nordstrom locations and online here.

Bonus Tip: An authentic fur scarf has a little edge to it, and makes everything else look a little more refined and elegant. More on this soon.

Bonus Tip II: UGG may or may not have earned a bad rap for those boots that we hate seeing girls wearing. However, these oiled and waterproofed leather alpine boots with Vibrim soles are tough. And their signature full-sheeepskin lining makes them the most comfortable boots in my collection, hands down.

Down peacoat by Hugo by Hugo Boss (M – available here). Fur scarf that my mother and I hamd-made from my late grandmother’s old fox fur coat. Jeans by JBrand (Kane, 32). Gloves by Boots by UGG Australia.

As I’ve mentioned, I’m currently studying Menswear Design at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City.

The program has been a valuable experience in many ways. With one semester remaining I have already benefited greatly from understanding the technicalities and nuances of pattern-making, fabric composition, clothing construction, etc.

For example, when I’m dealing with clothing manufacturers, both domestic and international, I am able to communicate using a technical vocabulary, give very specific instructions, hand-inspect the quality of their work, and revise samples for review and improvement.

Apart from the curriculum, another advantage of the program is simply being around other creative people with similar interests. I certainly have some stylish classmates. Paul Kim, featured here, has my favorite style of the bunch.

Like me, he loves tailored clothing and styles it with modern, youthful punches. He does “classic with a twist” (which just about every menswear designer is experimenting with these days) as good as anyone I know.

Paul was born and raised in South Korea. Prior to coming to the United States, Paul was a professional dancer who performed backup for a number of famous Korean singers and bands. This gave him the opportunity to meet professional stylists, which fueled his passion for clothing and eventually lead him to fashion design.

Here, he gave us a glimpse at the personal touches he puts into his wardrobe.

1. Subtle Colors, Unique Details

“I typically try to play within basic color combinations. This way I always have a simple backdrop to add subtle details.

I almost always try to dress somewhere between dressy and casual.

Here it’s dark denim with a blue shirt and navy pinstriped blazer under a classic tan trench…with a few different touches like the white & navy polka-dot socks, large safety pin on the chest pocket, and handmade studded patch that make the outfit a bit unique.”

Trench by Lago & Filo. Blazer by Rugby. Shirt by Uniqlo. Pants by H&M. Vintage tie (from his father when he participated in 1988 Seoul Olympic games). Shoes by Lago & Filo. Belt by Zara.

2. American Prep

A henley shirt can make a traditional preppy outfit a little more laid back and casual, and a little less predictable.

Accessories can let you put your own spin on a classic look – like the hat, glasses, pocket square, belt, socks.

Polka dot socks again, in a different proportion.

Blazer and trousers by Maison Martin Margiela. Henley by Shipley and Halmos. Bracelet by Number Nine. Fedora by Lago & Filo. Shoes Vintage. Glasses by Oliver peoples.

3. Military Inspired Tailoring

Fabric selection and pairing is crucial. A denim jacket and tailored trouser can look clean and modern in certain fabrics, but in rugged vintage cloth it can be a great throwback look as well.

The denim jacket is a functional layer, but also adds a casual element.

The blue in the argyle socks picks up on the blue in the shirt and pulls the look together.

Military jacket by Lago & Filo. Denim jacket Vintage. Shirt by Uniqlo. Tie by Les Celliers Du Prieure. Trousers by Top Man. Shoes by Lago & Filo. Glasses by Oliver peoples.

4. Making Vintage Look Modern and Refined

“This is a very dressy look, but the personal touches like the Rolling Stones patch, print bow tie and hand-studded pocket square make the outfit a bit humorous and less uptight.”

Bonus Tip: Don’t be afraid to add a patch to a piece to give it a personal touch. The selection is endless, it can always be easily removed, and the cost is negligible. (Post on this coming soon)

Vintage blazer. Cardigan by Banana Republic. Shirt by Marc Jacobs. Trouser by Dolce & Gabana. Vintage shoes. Glasses by Oliver Peoples.

5. Formally Casual

“Another simple color combination here… I like a casual outfit that hints at formal.

Also, rubber soles and lighter socks make this overall outfit less dressy, but still sharp.”

The shirt and jacket are actually both a very subtle hue of blue. The subtlety here makes this very tasteful (and still versatile), in my opinion.

Bonus Tip: Keep in mind, a big part of pulling this off, and making it appear casual, is confidence and a laid back demeanor.

Jacket by Raf Simons. Shirt by Maison Martin Margiela. Trousers by Uniqlo. Bow Tie by Marc Jacobs.

As I’ve written in the past, there are multiple advantages to seasonal suiting. In addition to the added comfort, the extended life of your garments and the pleasure of unveiling a fresh wardrobe when the weather changes, season-specific fabrics are also more versatile and more appropriate to wear as seperates than typical “four-season” fabrics.

In my opinion there is no such thing as a “four season” fabric. It might be labeled “year-round weight”, but in reality these are typically 9-11 ounce worsteds that are only truly appropriate for less than half the year. In NYC that’s roughly April-June and September-November, basically the time between your air conditioning and heating bills.

Add a waistcoat to that seasonal suit, and you have an investment piece that can be styled for just about any ocasion. Here’s proof using a sample of the grey donegal three-piece from my upcoming collection (which is taking much longer than expected, my apologies again).

1. Three Piece – Retro Corporate

A two-piece suit gives you three options for wearing it: the pants separately, the jacket separately, and the suit together. Add a vest into the mix and three options turn to seven different combinations.

We did a similar feature last year using my brown tweed three-piece. See HERE.

Bonus Tip: Winterize your look. Heavyweight suit, thick oxford shirt, wool flannel tie.

Bonus Tip II: A club collar and collar pin were meant to be. They look very natural together.

Bonus Tip III: A deep cuff (like this 2″) looks right on a chunkier cloth, and the added weight helps the pant drape nicely.

Three-piece donegal tweed suit by MAB by Dan Trepanier (more news on the upcoming collection soon). Oxford club collar shirt by Polo Ralph Lauren (custom fit M). Wool tie by JCrew. Silver collar pin by WANT. Wingtips by Scarpe di Bianco. Watch and brown alligator band by Montblanc.

2. Two Piece – Classic Business

The no-brainer.

Bonus Tip: A topcoat that hits at the mid-thigh is most versatile. I wear this thing on the weekends with jeans, a crewneck sweater and a beanie and it suddenly looks casual.

Donegal tweed suit by MAB by Dan Trepanier (more news on the upcoming collection soon). Topcocat by Brooks Brothers Black Fleece (size 2). Shirt by Michael Andrews Bespoke. Vintage tie. Captoe boots by Scarpe di Bianco.

3. Two Piece – Weekend Cool

This is a perfect example of the added versatility of a seasonal fabric. Because of the texture and drape of this cloth, the suit looks just as good with a t-shirt and sneakers as it does with a shirt and tie.

In contrast, a “year-round” worsted fabric almost always looks too much like a typically “business suit” to be believable with sneakers.

Donegal tweed suit by MAB by Dan Trepanier (more news on the upcoming collection soon). T-shirt by Kenneth Cole. Sneakers by Vans. Shades by Matsuda Eyewear.

4. Waistcoat + Trousers – Business Casual

The great thing about a three-piece is that it takes less time and effort in the morning. For example, if you plan to wear the waistcoat and trousers together, all you need to do is pick out a shirt (just about any shirt will work with this fabric) and a pair of shoes (brown or black) and you’re good to go.

Bonus Tip: Navy, brown and grey is a classic combination and will always work – but that doesn’t mean it has to be boring. Playing with textures rather than colors is a great way to make an interesting outfit that won’t look out of place.

Waistcoat and trousers by MAB by Dan Trepanier (more news on the upcoming collection soon). Shirt by Michael Andrews Bespoke. Monkstraps by Scarpe di Bianco. Shades by Persol.

5. Waistcoat + Trousers – Holiday Chic

Another example of a waistcoat + trousers look. It doesn’t have to be all business – but it will always look chic.

Donegal tweed waistcoat and trousers by MAB by Dan Trepanier (more news on the upcoming collection soon). Turtleneck by Club Monaco (M). Shoes by Scarpe di Bianco. Frames by Matsuda Eyewear. Watch and brown alligator band by Montblanc.

6. Blazer – Weekend Brunch

Don’t be afraid to layer up that jacket on the weekend, the donegal tweed looks right at home with denim.

Bonus Tip: The easiest way to pile on layers is to go from lightest on the inside to heaviest on the outside.

Bonus Tip II: Not all leather lace-up shoes are “dressy”. There are some awesome soft-sole lace-ups on the market for the perfect balance between dress and casual.

Bonus Tip III: Whenever you’re wearing a layer over a tailored jacket, try to keep the jacket buttoned. This allows the layers to flow better together and keep their positioning as you move around.

Donegal tweed jacket by MAB by Dan Trepanier (more news on the upcoming collection soon). Down vest by Land’s End (size S). Crewneck fair isle sweater by Club Monaco (size M). Oxford shirt by Thom Browne (size 2). Wool tie by Woolrich. Jeans by APC (new standard size 32). Cashmere blend socks Marcoliani. Suede captoe lace-ups by Surface to Air. Watch and brown alligator band by Montblanc.

7. Blazer – Low Key Night Out

Our shoot was in the early afternoon, but I would be more likely to wear this outfit when the sun goes down. Hitting a lounge with a lady or a dive bar with the boys.

Nothing says nightlife like a pair of black jeans. Even better if you make them waxed black jeans and beat the hell out of them.

Bonus Tip: Buy quality and don’t be afraid to wear it. Well-made clothing should be built to last.

I paid a decent amount for these boots, but I’ve had them for over 5 years (I actually wore them in one of the shots from the Esquire contest years ago).

They look a little beat-up right now, but that’s the way I like them. One quick polish and they’r back to looking brand new.

If I would have bought a cheaper alternative not only would they not look as cool, but I would’ve had to replace them by now.

Donegal tweed jacket by MAB by Dan Trepanier (more news on the upcoming collection soon).
8. Waistcoat Seperate – Sharp Weekender

The waistcoat on it’s own is a great way to sharpen a casual look.

Bonus Tip: If your topcoat fits snug and you’re not wearing a jacket under it, why not throw a square in the breast pocket? Just keep it understated.

Bonus Tip II: I’ve been mentioning the underestimated versatility of grey shoes. Post on this coming soon.

Donegal tweed waistcoat by MAB by Dan Trepanier (more news on the upcoming collection soon).
9. Pants Separate – Hitting the Night Club

And of course, don’t forget you have a great pair of versatile trousers to wear just about anywhere. In this case, perhaps a night on the town.

As we just discussed, a complete wardrobe has boot styles for all types of occasions.

If you’re only going to invest in one boot for the season, however, I would recommend a lace-up wingtip brogue, like these badass chocolate brown “Daltons” by Allen Edmonds.

The trim leather sole, sharp toe and rich color make them appear dressy while the tall lace box, full broguing and toe medallion make them appropriate for casual wear as well.

Here, I spent five days in these guys to break them in a little.

Monday

If you’re wearing boots with a tailored look they need to look sharp (and polished) and the suit should be cut from a Fall/Winter weight fabric – think flannel, corduroy, tweed, moleskin, cashmere, etc.

With a suit, keep the boots laced tightly all the way to the top. This keeps them looking nice and clean and allows your trousers to fall over them naturally.

A wide 2″ cuff looks great on trim-cut trousers in heavier fabric and gives the hem a little weight, pulling the pant down and allowing it to drape properly. And no, you don’t need pleats to have a cuff – don’t be restricted by these old fashioned “rules”.

Bonus Tip: The shirt, tie and suit all have a flannel finish, which makes this outfit very soft, warm and comfortable.

Bonus Tip II: The more-versatile-than-you-think flannel double breasted suit again, as featured here.

Bonus Tip III: A single-breasted coat over a double-breasted suit is more visually appealing than the other way around. A DB coat just covers up all the layers of your outfit.

“Dalton” boots by Allen Edmonds. Flannel suit by MAB by Dan Trepanier (more coming soon). Shirt and tie by Michael Andrews Bespoke. Jacket by APC (M). Scarf (in bicycle basket) by Yokoo Scarves.

Wednesday

It’s the perfect boot for business casual as well and looks awesome under a tweed trouser.

Bonus Tip: Sometimes I treat a lightweight jacket like a sweater – I like to leave it on to complete my look, even when I’m inside. It should be trim enough to fit under your heavier outerwear anyway.

Bonus Tip II: A corduroy tie is another one of those things that is a cross between formal and casual. Putting together elements of similar “appropriateness” is typically a recipe for a cohesive outfit.

“Dalton” boots by Allen Edmonds. Tweed trousers (part of suit) by MAB by Dan Trepanier (more coming soon). Glenplaid shirt and corduroy tie by Michael Andrews Bespoke. Jacket vintage Levis (size 38). Vintage naval issue peacoat (size 38).

Friday

You can bring just about anything to a good tailor – even an oversized vintage parka. I bought this thing for a few dollars and had my man Franklin take-in the body and sleeves. Now it’s my go-to when mother nature is not messing around.

If you’re in NYC, I recommend you see Franklin at The Tailoring Room. He’s my personal alterations tailor and a good friend. You can tell him I sent you :)

Bonus Tip: The beauty of a neutral corduroy suit (like this one from my MAB by DT Fall/Winter collection – more updates soon) is that you instantly have the perfect blazer and trouser separates.

Bonus Tip II: A fine gage turtleneck, dark jean, and classic blazer is a simple recipe for a refined look. See here.

Bonus Tip III: Try going tonal with the pocket square. Think similar shade and similar weight – like this camel cashmere square with brown tipping.

Bonus Tip IV: Try tying your scarf in one simple knot like an ascot and letting it cover your body under a suit jacket or blazer.

Bonus Yip V: I’ve had several pairs of jeans cropped with no break, but it doesn’t mean they’re only good for loafers or lace-ups in the Spring/Summer. Come cold weather they sit perfectly on top of my boots, showing off their awesome detail.

“Dalton” boots by Allen Edmonds. Corduroy jacket (part of suit) by MAB by Dan Trepanier (more coming soon). Forest green turtleneck by Uniqlo. Vintage parka (taken-in). Fair isle scarf by Polo Ralph Lauren. Denim by APC. Zipper tote by Filson. Woven leather gloves by Hilts & Willard. Wool pocket square by Armstrong & Wilson. Watch and brown alligator band by Montblanc.

Saturday

This “70s in Aspen” look was so much better in person. Sometimes the outfits don’t translate to camera as well.

Anyway, for those who’ve asked recently, this is a great look for a ski vacation. It’s sporty, warm, fun and you have layers that you can easily mix and match.

Bonus Tip: Try pairing deep saturated colors (like this plum corduroy pant and indigo denim shirt) and combining them with neutrals.

Don’t be afraid to roll that pant a little, a boot this sexy is meant to be seen.

“Dalton” boots by Allen Edmonds. Denim shirt by Michael Andrews Bespoke. Vintage cowichan knit full-zip cardigan. Herringbone/leather down vest by Penfield (S). Corduroys by Levis (34, tapered). Tortoise shades by Persol. Watch and brown alligator band by Montblanc. Belt and alligator strap by Ralph Lauren Purple Label.

Sunday

When you’re just kicking it around town, amp up your laid-back casual look with some sharp footwear.

Bonus Tip: Think about how textures relate to each other. The fur trim, the marled sweater and the distressed jeans all have a similar multi-tonal texture that brings them together nicely.

“Dalton” boots by Allen Edmonds. Sweater (M), down vest (M) and denim (34) by Ralph Lauren Denim & Supply. Vintage henley t-shirt. Shades by Matsuda. Watch by Brera Orologi. Railroad spike cuff by Giles & Brother.

Yours in style,
